Hi Andrew,
I just wanted to send you a review of your book as I have found it invaluable; I have recently started a relationship with guy who already has a Alaskan Malamute, she’s approximately 18 months old, with a very shy temperament. I have never owned a dog before so wanted a clear and concise ‘do and don’t’ guide. Your book has been a great start to my understanding of Mals. The first area which will be the most useful is the Potty training, closely followed by the house training! Thank you for writing this comprehensive guide!

Hi Andrew,
The tips are very useful, I was not aware of most of the tips mentioned in the guide. The house training chapter is the most relevant for me at this stage. I would recommend that you add more details regarding at what age each type of training can start.

Here is a sample chapter from the guide (House Training chapter):

House Training – House training is often used synonymously with potty
training but in reality although house training does include potty training, it
can best be described as training your dog how to act and behave within
your home.

House training tips for your Malamute:

-Start Early. Unlike potty training, house training can begin the day
you bring your Malamute home. If you teach your Malamute pup what it is
and is not allowed to do as a puppy you will have less problems with your
dog as it gets older. Sure it may be cute to let the adorable ball of fur sit in
your lap or lay on the furniture while it is a small puppy but as it gets bigger
and starts to chew on things it won’t be so cute anymore, and by then it will
be nearly impossible to completely correct this behavior.

-Do not let your Malamute on any furniture or beds. Allowing your
Malamute to sit on the same furniture as you will make it extremely difficult
for you to occupy the Alpha role in the house. By sitting on the same
furniture as you, a Malamute will see itself as being your equal, and if you do
not occupy the dominate with this incredibly smart breed of dog, proper
training will be next to impossible.

-Make sure that your Malamute knows that everything in your home is
yours, even the dog toys. By applying your dominance over both you and
your Malamute’s possessions, your Malamute will be less likely to feel as if it
can chew on things throughout the house. You can do this by taking a toy
away from your Malamute while it is playing and make them sit or lie down
before you give it back to them.

-Do not let your Malamute mark his territory in your home. While it is
inevitable that your new Malamute will have a few accidents in the house,
you should immediately clean the urine up and use stain remover and strong
scented cleaner to remove the stain completely and cover up the smell of
urine. Chances are you will only have this problem if you take an adult
Malamute into your home and it tries to claim the territory as its own. If you
allow your Malamute to mark its territory within your home it will be
extremely hard for you to maintain alpha status.

Secrets to Dog Training can be an extremely useful resource when it comes to training an Alaskan Malamute. This roughly 260 page e-book is chalk full of helpful tips and advice and is written for owners of any experience level. Although the book is targeted at a general audience and therefore tends to cover general tips that are not breed specific, it still covers a variety of information which can be useful during Malamute training.

Click Here to Visit Secrets to Dog Training

The author of this e-book is Daniel Stevens, a highly respected and world renowned dog trainer; so you can be sure that all of the methods and techniques presented in this book have been developed and tested by one of the best dog trainers in the world. As mentioned before this book is not targeted at any specific breed but rather dogs in general and although he may not discuss malamute training directly, many of the methods presented can be used on any dog, including Alaskan Malamutes.

What I particularly liked:

What I particularly liked about Secrets to Dog Training is that it helps train the owner in addition to the dog. As a dog owner I can say from experience that one of the hardest parts of training a dog is maintaining the patience and focus necessary to ensure successful training. The methods and techniques discussed in Secrets to Dog Training are designed to help the trainer just as much as they are to help the dog. The best training techniques tend to be the easiest and Stevens bases a large portion of his book on that philosophy. Because Malamutes are generally much harder to train than other dogs the no hassle methods and techniques presented by Stevens are especially useful.

The following chapters and sub-sections will generally be the most useful in the process of training a Malamute:

What other people are saying about Secrets to Dog Training….

“Hi, I bought the online book Secrets To Dog Training, because I have a big Guardian dog, and she was very aggressive to strangers in our house. I knew she could be trained because her mother was not aggressive. I got several good tips from the book as well as a personal email on how to correct her behavior. It worked and she is now much much better. I am very pleased and satisfied I bought the book. Thanks a bunch Daniel for doing what you do.”
– Doug Cummins

“I love Secrets to Dog Training. I rescued two German Shepherds and I did not know anything about dog obedience. One of my dogs was quite aggressive with other dogs, and crazy about chasing cats and squirrels. What I like about your book is that you give insights into what the dog is thinking, why they behave the way they do, and tips on what to do to correct the problem. I have learned so much from your instructions, and my dogs are now following my commands and I am able to control them. Thanks for the great book.”
– Carla J. Johnson

“Hi There, just to let you know how grateful I am for finding your website and ordering the book. After spending hundreds of dollars, having my gut in perpetual knots for years, and feeling as if my best intentions were no good, I am so relieved to report to everyone that I now have a program that works, and know my beloved Jack Russell has a future he can safely live. I am still struggling with him, and have to take him away next month on a trip because I can’t trust him with my new neighbors, but I think by Christmas time my anxiety will be in the past. And thanks to what? Your clear, down to earth, logical explanation about the Alpha Dog concepts in who is boss. Not to mention my change from being rough to gentle whispering.”
– Lori Morina

“I purchased the Secrets To Dog Training program after I acquired a second puppy that was seven weeks old. My first puppy a male then 14 months old was a little bit aggressive with her. Now my puppies eat, sunbake and play together very happily. I would recommend it to anyone who cares about their animals.”
– Lyn Spain

Bottom Line:

At just over 260 pages the only negative aspect of Secrets to Dog Training is its size. For an eBook marketed towards general readers this resource is exceptionally large. Its size means that it contains mountains of information regarding dog training but for the dog owner looking for a few quick tips or hints such a preponderance of material may cause information overload. This is not a resource meant for a quick skim over to make dog training easier but should rather be used as a manual or instruction booklet of sorts during the dog training process. If you are looking for a resource that is Malamute specific this is not it, though a majority of the general information presented can and should be used while training a Malamute.

Unlike other dog breeds, the Alaskan malamute can also be trained useful skills. These sturdy dogs have proven their reliability time and time again. If they were good enough for Arctic explorers then they are probably good enough for you. Before teaching these advanced techniques, Alaskan Malamute training should first include a few basic commands.

Keep in mind that this dog breed can grow up to well over 100 pounds so training should start young. Starting later could prove difficult on your part.

Obedience training is the heart of every dog training regimen. It teaches your dog to take you seriously and develops a “conscience” which he will need to remember not to repeat a bad habit. It also plays an important part for your dog’s safety. After completing obedience training, various commands can now be used to train your dog. This is where sit, stay, heel and lie down come into play.

House training is also important. You would not want your dog turning your own house into his bathroom. A common training method is by using newspapers on your dog’s usual toilet site. After he gets used to using the newspaper, you can move it outside the house where he would eventually do his business.

Alaskan Malamute puppy training is very much like teaching a child. You have to make training sessions fun for your dog. Give lots of encouragement and praise. Start each lesson by reviewing what he already knows. Remember to keep each session short but frequent. Practice three times a day for ten minutes for example.

No specialized tools are required for pet training. Alaskan Malamute training is not very different from this. All you need is your voice and accompanying hand signals. Vary the tone of your voice according to how he responds or not at all. Lastly, patience and effort would greatly help.

So your dog now knows how to heel and not make a mess in your kitchen? You are probably wondering, “Now what?” The good news is there are still plenty of techniques to teach your Alaskan malamute dog. Unlike other breeds, techniques available for your dog are quite interesting and useful in real-life situations.

Since Alaskan malamute dogs were mainly used in the Arctic, survival is a key part in Alaskan malamute training. They were largely used for search and rescue. With the Alaskan wilderness being their natural habitat, they make short work of the harsh climate. This is made possible by their sturdy bodies covered with a coarse double coat.

The strength of these dogs is also harnessed through sled pulling. They were usually used as “workhorses” by Arctic explorers pulling vital supplies across the treacherous landscape. Sled racing also became popular with Alaskan malamutes at the helm.

If you decide on training dogs advanced techniques you would want to seek a professional trainer with years of experience and expertise. Do not try to take this matter into your won hands especially if you have no experience of your own. Similar to basic dog training, a lot of patience and effort is required. This should definitely be considered for your Alaskan malamute training.

This survival technique would be greatly useful in the real world. If you live in an area where there is a reasonable risk of snow storms, search and rescue training for your dog is definitely a worthy investment.

Before starting your Alaskan malamute training, you might want to know more about him.

The Alaskan Malamute is a strong and sturdy dog. Its physical abilities have made it particularly well-suited in harsh and unforgiving conditions such as the Alaskan wilderness. They can grow up to 71 cm. They are not as tall as other large breeds but just as strong. Many people have come to rely upon this breed from the Inuit tribes to the early Arctic explorers. They were mainly used sled dogs, pack animals and even search and rescue.

These dogs can also be kept as house pets due to their amenable temperament. It is regarded as a friendly and pleasant dog. A stuffed toy bears resemblance to a malamute puppy. They are also known as fiercely loyal dogs. Though friendly to humans, it may become aggressive towards other animals.

If you live in warmer climates you can still breed this dog. However, they are more suited to cooler temperatures. Grooming does not require a lot of effort. Since it is a big dog, it requires a lot exercise to keep it strong. Additionally, it needs adequate protein intake for muscle mass.

Training Alaskan malamutes can be quite a handful since they are typically strong-willed although they are fairly intelligent and easy to train. Being a pack dog, it tends to lead so dog training should start as early as puppyhood.

Alaskan malamute training can be a wonderful experience and should make the most out of your dog’s abilities.
