Unlike other dog breeds, the Alaskan malamute can also be trained useful skills. These sturdy dogs have proven their reliability time and time again. If they were good enough for Arctic explorers then they are probably good enough for you. Keep in mind that this dog breed can grow up to well over 100 pounds so training should start young. Starting later could prove difficult on your part.

Obedience training is the heart of every dog training regimen. It teaches your dog to take you seriously and develops a “conscience” which he will need to remember not to repeat a bad habit. It also plays an important part for your dog’s safety. After completing obedience training, various commands can now be used to train your dog. This is where sit, stay, heel and lie down come into play.

House training is also important. You would not want your dog turning your own house into his bathroom. A common training method is by using newspapers on your dog’s usual toilet site. After he gets used to using the newspaper, you can move it outside the house where he would eventually do his business.

Start each lesson by reviewing what he already knows. Remember to keep each session short but frequent. Practice three times a day for ten minutes for example.
